I had this happen when using a 36" IDE cable on a Promise 133TX controller
card. I switched to a 24" cable and the write errors went away. The cable
was new and rated for ATA133, but I have since seen that the standard for
IDE cable is 24" or less. So, make sure the cable is rated for the
application you are using -- (24" and 80 conductor).

Worth a check.
