You don't tell us which OS, so that can make it a little more difficult to
diagnose.  However, from your description it sounds like classic hard drive
fragmenting.  I would start by running defrag.  If your drive is very
fragmented, you could be in for a long wait.  Depending on drive size, this
can take anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours.
