Consider replacing just the fan. Most heat sink assemblies have the fan
attached with four screws. Remove the old fan and mount the new one on the
old heat sink. If this is not possible, then you might consider mounting a
larger fan on a bracket to blow air onto the existing heat sink. The heat
sink only needs air movement; it does not matter whether the fan is on the
sink or not. I have mounted such "external" fans on my systems because
larger fans are more reliable than the little ones that are on the heat
sink.


Prying the heat sink off a CPU is likely to result in a fractured chip, but
then again, that may be a good excuse to upgrade :)
