It sounds like a bad cable but you've already checked for that.  Could
either of the cartridges be the wrong part?  It is easy to install a
cartridge that is not the exact part number required for the particular
model.  This can cause erratic behavior.  Maybe the logic board in the
printer was damaged by a surge.
