  This really ought to be a FAQ....

  An awful lot of "56K" internal modems using PCI bus are "WinModems",
which implement some functions in the driver which runs on your CPU
rather than in the modem hardware.  If you have a fast CPU and don't
multi-task a lot, this may not be a problem, but for those of us who
like to surf while a couple of downloads are coming in, a hardware
modem is worth a few bucks extra.
