I have experienced this numerous times assisting customers with this issue.
If you boot to the 2000 cd and go to the repair console and run a chkdsk /p
it will fix files needed to boot. I have had great success with this on win
2k as well as xp.

Subject: [PCBUILD] windows 2000 change

Hi,
In the last week I have had 3 windows 2000 harddrives fail to boot. I had
one failure then usded a back up drive and it did the same. it will boot to
the bar runnin along the bottom then go to a blue screen saying window s has
stopped to protect the computer. when the third drive did the dame thing I
gave up and put 98 on the machine. BUT I would like to know why I found out
you can't do a floppy boot to fix master boot record with 2000. the machines
in question are dell 233's with 256 memory. Anyone had this problem? Jerry
