The V.90 standard depends on the fact that the ISP end (the modem you are
dialing) has a pure digital connection to the phone line. The elimination of one
analog to digital conversion makes true 56K (uncompressed) possible (note that
due to FCC regulations, the actual speed is 53K max in the US). On a V.90 modem,
upload speeds are 28.8K max because you (the user) do not have a digital
connection to the telco.
