I am having trouble trying to install a modem in Windows 95 (OSR2) on a
home built PC.

The PC is using Octec Rhino 12 motherboard and a Pentium 166. I have
enabled the motherboard COM1 for the mouse and disabled motherboard COM2.
COM2 is taken by a hand scanner board.

The Zoltrix modem is model FM-VSP56i3. It is a voice/data/fax type, not a
winmodem and not PNP using ISA slot. It has jumpers to select IRQ and COM
port. The instructions state that you have to set up the COM port first
before installing the modem. That is where I am having the problem.

Previously I had an Acer ISA modem set up in windows using Com5 and IRQ7.

The Zoltrix has settings for Com1-4 and most all the IRQ's. I tried
setting to Com3, since I have an S3 video, and the Zoltrix manual has
warning about possible conflicts if setting is set to COM4.

When I tried to set up the port in Windows using Add New Hardware and auto
detect, it did not find the port. When I tried to manually add the port,
it tried to assign Com3 and IRQ4 which already were assigned to the
existing Com ports. (The port drivers are on the disk that comes with the
modem). I was not able to change the IRQ in the Device Manager.
Apparently Windows does not see the port at all.

I tried to set the modem to Com3 and IRQ 4 but on bootup the BIOS detected
the conflict and halted. So apparently the BIOS sees the hardware but
Windows doesn't.

Is there anything that I am overlooking that may be keeping Windows from
seeing the modem port?

TIA
Doug Simmons
