Actually I was able to solve the problem myself with a little more
time.  I was just trying to clear the whole drive to re-install XP (and partition it this time). I just
had to disable the drive (from Auto) in BIOS.  This enabled me to boot.  Used IBM's disk
manager to clean the boot sector.  Problem solved.  Thanks for your help

Seems like it left some files in the boot sector.  The weird thing is that I could not boot from
CD, or floppy until that HD was disconnected or disabled!
