I can't imagine that a hard drive of any kind would care about an icon.  Does it not back up the file and or folder?  Or just not show the icon you changed it to?  The new icon displayed with the file is just a reference to the icon image elsewhere on the hard drive. If you aren't backing up the actual icon itself, then the link is to nothing and cannot show the referenced icon image.  You are likely not backing up the folder that contains the actual icon, but only backing up the link to the icon that is with the file/folder you are copying. 

I can't imagine that a hard drive of any kind would care about an icon.  It just accepts whatever you choose to copy to it.

I would suggest a MY BOOK from Western Digital, a 250 GB that I bought from 
Dell.  It works for me.
