I just upgraded my primary slave drive from a WD 1.8 GB to a WD 8.4 GB. I
backed-up the partitions to CD-RW and restored to the new drive. The
partitions on the new drive came up with the old ms-dos nemesis "ms-dos
compatibility mode". I have seen this happen before with HD upgrades. Based
on experience with this same problem, I removed the system.dat and user.dat
files and reinstalled Win98. Except for a driver problem with the sound
card, everything looks good and the HD is no longer in ms-dos compatibility
mode.
However, I lost most of my system tray and Norton AV prompted for a
reinstall because of a lost dll. This really disturbed me. I replaced the
system.dat and user.dat files with the original ones. I was then prompted
with a registry configuration error, and running scanreg resulted in backup
files being restored. I'm not sure where these backup files come from, as I
deleted the system.bak and user.bak files.
I would like to get back to the configuration before I reinstalled Win98
and then deal with the HD problem. Does anyone know how I can do this?
