I also think it is a software problem.  What operating system do you have
and what software are you using to scan?   Both of these are critical to
determining if a scanner will work.  Windows 95 OSR2 will not work reliably
with most USB scanners.  I would try another scanning program first to see
if the scanner will work in other applications.  You can download and
install Irfanview for free since it has scanning capabilities.

I think that you will have even more problems trying to use a parallel port
scanner and most SCSI scanners are generally more expensive.
