In theory a CPU upgrade is supposed to enhance the performance of overall
CPU speed.  I do not typically advise using them, as they can present
trouble installation.  I have installed many different kinds for the clients
I serve, and either they turn out to be non installer friendly, not compatible
with hardware, or just don't deliver the expected performance.

Have her spend a little more money and upgrade the logic board and processor.
You can get a bottom pentium and board pretty cheap-that is providing it will
fit in a packard bell case.  Some of their cases are proprietary and have built
in video and serial ports.  In this case you would be unable to put a generic
board in.  Best of luck.
