Ed,
CMOS-----BIOS----SETUP....all the same thing. If the setup is lost because
of the M/B battery going dead, the settings required to "see" the hard
drive correctly are lost. Consequently, you need to enter Setup to fix the
BIOS settings. I'm not familiar with Compaq, but there must be a section in
the setup that discovers hard drive settings automatically.

As to Linux on a laptop, all I can say is good luck and may the force be
with you.
