Have you tried pressing the Control Key or F8 as the computer boots to
bring up the boot menu? Doing so with Windows98SE installed will provide
the choice of option 5 "Command Prompt Only. If you choose this, enter the
following command at the prompt:
scandisk c: /autofix /nosave /nosummary. (You can also add the switch
/surface
if you are concerned that the disk is really getting bad.) This will run the
DOS
version of scandisk and will relieve you of having to respond to a Fix it?
prompt
every time a bad cluster is encountered. I've had to "rescue" a number of
floppies
using this technique, although sometimes the /autofix doesn't do as good a
job
as responding to every prompt (I've no idea why on that.).
