I'm not sure if this helps, but I had same problems with cumstomers's
machines, most of them can be solved by update drivers (sometimes for sound
card, sometimes joystick), sadly, sometimes, there are no other option than
change another sound card / joystick.

My best guess for your case is: make sure you  installed the latest drivers,
and have DirectX 8.
