Three hours for 1 gigabyte?  Dude, I've encoded raw AVI files of 1.6
gigabytes in only 2 or 3 minutes on a 1.2 GHz computer and a 7200 RPM ATA-66
hard drive.  I haven't actually timed this with a stopwatch, but the
completion meter jumps 1% about every two seconds on a file that size.  I
encode AVI files this large while I watch the first few minutes of Three's
Company.

Could it be that your AVI files are already compressed some?  My 1.6
gigabyte file has about 4 minutes of video/audio data because I capture
320x240 with 24-bit color and 44,100 Hz stereo sound.  If your 1 gigabyte
AVI file has 60 minutes of video or something, then that explains why it
takes 3 hours to encode it.  Not only is your PC uncompressing it, but it's
also recompressing it to a smaller file size.
