I realize this is a bit too obvious, but I trust that you tried to
FDISK/FORMAT by booting from a bootable floppy.  (Wipes H.D. clean.)

Re: Heads/Cylinders/Sectors-per-track, 4/805/26 = 83,720 sectors
(approx. 42.8 Meg) and 5/907/17 = 77,095 sectors (approx. 39.5 Meg)
is probably the nearest 17 sectors-per-track version of the standard
BIOS Hard Drive Types that is smaller than the actual type. (You
wouldn't want to go past the last sector on the innermost cylinder of
the real drive.)
