I always get rid of that stupid 'real player' and install the media player
instead. I've never had a problem yet.
Personally, I think it's pretty annoying , but that's just my opinion. I'm
not aware of any lost options by removing the player.

But, as long as we're talking about it, I am assuming the alternative to
this is Windows Media Player.  Is that the video player of choice?  If I
remove Real Player, do I lose other options?
