I want to change my answer... (Slightly, - original below.)

While cable select "used to be" older technology,
after seeing all the opposing answers I did a search
and found it has new uses as part of plug and play,
and is being "re-born".

You also need a special cable, with a twist ~ and line
28 not being grounded ~~ ( more or less...)
In seven years, I have never seen it used...

(Note: To put this in perspective, plain floppy drives
have "always" used this way of identifying themselves
to the system... How much older can you get than that?)

So, while all of us were more or less correct as far as we
went, some of the more "up to date" list members gave a
better more modern, and "forward looking" answer.
        Hope this helps. Rick Glazier
