Compression mkae use of the fact that within your binary/ascii files, bits
with patterns can be found.  The compression software then substitues those
bit patterns with simpler patterns wherever they are found.  These simpler
patterns points to a look-up table which contains the original patterns.

Winzip also uses compression algorithms to achieve what it is doing.

This dates back to the old days of mainframes.  The storage devices used to
be magnetic cores.  The magnetic cores have to be mounted on the reading
machines before they can be read from.  Subsequently, this terminology stick
even to today.

Mounting a device nowadays means making the device recognizable to the
operating system.

Goodbye to your data in the compressed portion of your harddisk!
