This is just a stab in the dark Steve, but I am guessing the the low RAM
is causing your problems.  Tape drives stream the data and at 16 Meg, I
think the tape software is overrunning the available RAM and it doesn't
know how to recover.

The Zip drive works because it uses less sophisticated compress and copy
techniques which do not stream the data.

Add more RAM and try the most recent software for whichever drive you
attempt to use.
