You got me to thinking...

The PIII may be "cheating" a bit with its SIMD instructions, which doesn't
constitute a bottleneck. I tried to get as close to your setup testing as I
could with what I had...

Chaintech CT-6WTV2
128Meg PC133 (Generic)
Hercules TNT 32Meg
WD 20.5 66/7200

Unreal Flyby Test Demo 1 All the bells and whistles BUT SIMD enabled (1024X768
16 Bit)

Celeron 366@550 43 fps/avg ($76)
Celeron 533@600 46 fps/avg ($119)
P IIIe 550@550 46 fps/avg ($221)

Here's some real numbers showing processor bottlenecks;

Abit BX6 R-2
192 Meg Micron 8ns PC 100
Abit TNT 16 Meg
13.4 Maxtor-33

Unreal Flyby Test Demo 1 All the bells and whistles enabled (1024X768 16 Bit)

Celeron 300A@450 32 fps (avg)
Celeron 366@550 40 fps (avg)
P III 550E @550 53 fps (avg)

I found the 13 fps leap with no increase in processor speed (Cel@550 vs.
P III@550) astonishing. Processors CAN be a big bottleneck.
