You may have already considered this:
Make sure the connections are correct not just
on the microphone, but speakers as well.
Do you have a modem with mic/spkr jacks ?
And verify Audio Properties by double-clicking
the speaker icon next to the time, then options,
then properties. Double check which boxes
are checked.
