I had the same situation a while back when I replaced my Win98 computer to 
an new XP OS computer. I found the fasted, least involved way was to pull my 
old 98 hard drive (containing MANY programs I needed), purchase an 
inexpensive ($20.00 to $40.00 depending on sales) hard drive enclosure or 
kit, plug (ribbon and power cable) the old drive in it, hook it up via USB 
(included in the kit) to the new computer and let XP take care of the 
rest.The enclosure is self-contained, with instructions, just waiting for an 
internal hard drive. You can use it as is or transfer applications at your 
leisure. Just make sure you follow all the "open computer" and "handling 
hard drive" precautions when removing your old drive. Also if you have any 
shortcuts set up for your old applications, you will have to change the path 
to the new drive letter assigned by XP to your old drive.
