The last ones I put in just added to the motherboard IDE controller
channels.  It then gives 4 channels of two devices per channel. I am
familiar with the 486 boards where the single channel (usually non-ATPI)
had to be disabled to use the add in card.  Also I've used the IDE port
that is on many sound cards to connect a read only CDR drive to give 5 IDE
devices with no add in cards.  I've gotten only read - only CDR to work
though.
