I had a similar problem installing a PCI card in my computer. My MB has a sound
card built in, but it is seen as PCI slot 2 in my system. However, slot 2 also
exists physically. When I tried to plug a card into that slot, everything
crashed. Switched the card to a different slot, and everything works.
According to the MB manufacturer, my options are to (1) disable the sound card,
or (2) don't use the slot.

If you have a similar configuration, this could be your problem.
