From: Kyle Elmblade :Subject: [PCBUILD] SIIG Ultra ATA/66 and Windows 2000

Help! I bought a SIIG Ultra ATA/66 card to put into my system and it will
not work with Windows 2000 properly. I was able to load Windows 98 without
a hitch.

I inserted the driver disk at the beginning of the install when asked
(making sure to press F6 at the very beginning). Everything looks like it's
doing what it's supposed to until it tries to load the GUI portion of the
install. Then, time begins to stand still. It takes over 30 minutes for
the system to finally access the drive. In the mean-time I can see it
seeking the drive. The drive light goes solid for a little bit, blinks a
few times, then goes out for a little bit, then the process starts all over
again. After the 30 minutes it finally starts loading.

I suffered through the entire process one time. This took nearly four
hours. Every time the system needed to reboot it would go through the
non-GUI startup fine, but as soon as the GUI screen came up it would take
20-30 minutes to load the rest. It seemed to work o.k. once it was loaded,
but a 20-30 minute boot is not acceptable. I went to the SIIG site and
downloaded Windows 2000 specific drivers, and the flash for the BIOS, so
everything there is as updated as possible.

My system: ABIT BH6 (rev 1.0 I think), Intel Celeron 300A (not over-clocked
at this time), 128MB PC100 Generic RAM, Primary HD on ATA/66 = Seagate
Medalist 8641 8.3GB, Secondary HD on ATA/66 = Maxtor 8.0GB, Primary IDE on
motherboard is disabled, Secondary IDE on Motherboard has a Toshiba CD ROM
set as master, Diamond Viper V550 16MB video, Sound Blaster PCI128 Sound,
Apache A56SP-RA ISA modem, USR 56k ISA modem.

One thing I did try was pulling the card and loading Windows 2000 on the
regular IDE channels. This worked without issue, so I know it has something
to do with the card.

I've emailed tech support at SIIG, but haven't received a response yet. I
wanted to know what you people thought first. Thanks in advance.

Kyle,

I have not had any experience with the SIIG card but I have used the onboard
HPT366 controller from Highpoint and the Promise Ultra 66 card. I am not
sure if the SIIG card is the same but the HPT366 and the Promise card do not
like to share an IRQ. When you were able to boot into Win2K did you check
to see if the card was sharing an IRQ with any other cards? The BH6 has the
ability to set IRQ's in the BIOS so that you can prevent the SIIG controller
from sharing an IRQ in both Win 98 and Win2K. The PCI slots share IRQ's as
follows:
PCI Slot 1 Shares IRQ with AGP slot
PCI Slot 2
PCI Slot 3
PCI Slot 4 Shares IRQ with PCI Slot 5
PCI Slot 5 Shares IRQ with PCI Slot 4

Also check to see which PCI slot shares an IRQ with the USB.

If the controller is located in a PCI slot other then 2 or 3 or 1 if you do
not have an AGP Video card then it will be sharing an IRQ if both slots are
occupied.

Hope this helps,

Mary Wolden
