Yes there is a solution to your troubles.  You are having a problem with
what are called INT 13 Extentions.  This is a thing manufactures started
putting in the BIOS around '98 to cross the 8.4 gig boundry.  Western
Digital and other drive manufactures created software called overlay
programs to allow older mainboards without INT 13 Extentions to access
larger disks.  You can find western digitals overlay program called EZ-BIOS
here: http://support.wdc.com/download/

A word of warning: back up any important data because this program may very
well wipe the drive clean.
