Appreciate the response.  Regarding that system, I'd advised him to remove
newly installed NIC; check and swap around or replace IDE cables, check
bios settings, etc.  It appears that primary IDE channel died -he tried a
known working drive with same results; secondary is fine though.  Never
seen that before.  As for what MB he's using, he couldn't tell me; systems
is a beige-box bought for pocket money about a year ago; bought as a refurb
he says.  I advised replacing MB.
