  Although we refer to the IDE/EIDE/ATAPI interface chip as a "controller", it's
really more of a bus "bridge" and the controller, in a more traditional
sense, is part of the IDE ("Integrated Drive Electronics") on the master
drive.  It appears that some part of this has become broken or inaccessible
on your drive.
  In a previous thread, I referred to sources which claimed that improper
removal of some boot-sector viruses could permanently impair the function of
some drives; it sounds like this is an example.
