Gary,

HP printers have the print head as part of the ink cartridge.  When you
replace the cartridge you are also replacing the print head.  Any printers
that use the same ink cartridge will have identical print quality.  As you
surmised, speed and other features or options are what make the
difference.

USB is serial LPT is parallel.  The LPT port will be faster to communicate
to the printer, BUT the printer's PPM output is the REAL bottleneck.  Both
parallel and USB can feed data to the printer faster than it can output it
so the question is really moot.
