have you tried using Disk Management (see that topic in the general W2k
help)?
If you are willing to format partitions I guess it will be ok for you to
delete partitions?

Do the following:

Delete both partitions using Disk Management.
Create a new primary partition of any size, give it drive letter C and
format it.
Next, create an extended partition using the rest of your hard drive.
Inside the extended partition, create one or more logical partitions, give
them drive letters D, E, ... etc.

I suppose you will be using drive C for your OS, and possibly applications.
You could use drive D for your data, and possibly an E drive for backup.
This solution does not require the Partion Magic third party software (which
is very good for moving and resizing partitions)

Sorry, I do not understand what you mean by "spanning".
