Yes, I am aware of DXDiag. My problem was not that DirectX was giving a
specific error. The problem was that a specific piece of software was
running fine before installing DirectX 7. So, since the program uses
DirectX to do some cross fading (which is where it is screwing up), I
wanted to trouble shoot the problem by returning to the previous version
where it was working. Microsoft does not make this too easy.

I did however find a util called dxun at http://www.ebrink.com that seems
to have done the trick. I am now back to version 6.
