I think Ultra may be right, and my problem - Internet Explorer gradually
slowing the computer to a crawl - may be caused by Norton Anti-Virus. Norton
has now started to demand *daily* updates - I allowed it to look for updates
for a couple of days, but it just came back and reported that it could find
no new virus definitions.

But I don't want to run the computer without any virus protection. What is
the most sensible anti-virus policy, please?
