The cable modem is connected to a USB port? If the original recovery disk was scratched, I don't think you could have made a better copy. The copy wouldn't be scratched but it would have fallouts where the original was scratched and dinged.  Maybe you're missing some critical files. Try updating the drivers for your USB ports in device manager.  Better yet, go buy a NIC card for $10 and use a Cat 5 cable to connect rather than USB. It's a better connection anyway.
