I have a used HP Pavilion XL866 that came with Windows ME installed. Due to some problems that were mostly of my own creation, I installed a new version of Windows XP Home, and XP now runs great. However, now when I try to power down the machine, only Windows closes and the screen goes black, yet the fan and processor keep running. In order to turn off or reboot the computer, I have to manually hold down the power button for several seconds until all goes silent. I have reinstalled software, changed BIOS settings and tried seemingly everything recommended by "online experts" -- all to no avail. Anybody have any answers? Thanks.
