I called Technical Suport this morning and spoke to someone in Utah. They
sent me the same FAQ that is on-line describing how to manually prepare for
a fresh install (tried it and it didn't work). However, after applying the
file you recommended below... all is well again. I notice that the Network
Associates site and the McAfee site are very different, although they're
owned by NAI.

Some other signs that this is the case include:

[-] After the .dat update is completed, it will actually say that the update
is at .4072
[-] There are also issues with McAfee Virus Scan and Internet Explorer 5 and
Express 5 (They offer on-line support at:
http://naisupport.sento.com/faq.asp?URL=/kba/virusscan/vsie5andoutlookperfis
sues.html
[-] It also looks like you still need to include the EXTRA.DAT file in the
Virus Scan directory as the .dat updates do not provide it.

Thanks for the brain-storming and eventual fix!

> A - This has been attributed to an older version of Mcscan32.vxd on your

> Mcscan32.vxd to your Desktop (same location as the exe file). Reboot your
