John,
There are other factors that affect temperature. Different coolers on the
CPU, different case fans and case designs, ambient room temperature, etc.
It's doubtful you will get the same readings, no matter where the thermistor
is mounted. Anyway, Abit's site should have the info, and it should be in
the mobo manual. I have the same board and CPU.

i have an abit kt7a raid board and a 1000Mhz thunderbird chip  about six of
my friends all have the same board and chip all of us get diff readings of
cpu temp when cpu is idle
some of us have the thermistor touchin the chip and some of us dont  no
where can we find it written down  the correct position of the said
thermister under the chip can you help
should it touch the chip or should it be off the chip ????
