Thanks to all. Its fixed!! IE4 was updating subscriptions automatically at
1:00 AM every morning. I did not knowingly enable this!!

Thanks for your time,

Fred Hahnel

I've had an upgrade install of WIN98 on my computer now for about 3 months.
It is hooked up to a separate phone line of which I'm allowed 400 calls a
month w/o per call charges. The phone line was being accessed up to 600
times a month. Now for the life of me I couldn't figure out why. The
computer was moved from a basement office to our den. My wife noticed that
the computer would randomly dial out to our ISP using the Internet dialer (
It dials out and stays on our for about 15 seconds and automatically hangs
up). One common time it dials out is at 1 AM in the morning (computer is on
24 x 7), the same time I have task scheduler to scan disk. [Please note that
DUN is NOT being accessed by this action but rather the dialer?? that is
used by Internet Explorer]
Reading several posts about this type of problem I tried several things: I
made DUN ask to be prompted which was unsuccessful (even have to insert the
password); removed "Instant Messenger" from the HD; stopped Task Scheduler
yesterday. 10 minutes after I stopped Task Scheduler it dialed out again
and hung up.

Please help! This has got to be happening 5 to 10 times a day and
unplugging the computer from the phone line is NOT an option.

Thanks,

Fred Hahnel
