I doubt that it is the hard drive, and it could be the fan, but the most
likely choice is the cdrom.  These can get out of balance a bit and make
quite a bit of racket and still work.  The vibration is worst when the cd
is first accessed then may taper off or not.  The vibration may sound like
it is coming from somewhere else.
