Didn't notice a reply even though it's been a couple of days, so I'll
take a stab:

Display the Windows volume control window, choose File -> Properties, and
click the radio button for record (rather than playback) controls, click
OK, then make sure the checkbox for the microphone input is selected
rather than one of the other inputs (CD music, line-in jack, etc.)  Most
folks don't realize that you have to select which input for the sound
card to use, even though you might be hearing the sound already through
the speakers.

This may be entirely off-base for you, however, since you say that the
slider control in Control Panel is greyed-out.  You may have a driver
problem instead.
