had a similar problem some years ago and the culprut was the ide
controller card, I would think this is the  first suspect

only other thing I can think of is that to get my 486 dx4 100 to work
with a 1.7gig drive I had to install ontrack disk manager which
partitions it to a size which is acceptable to the 486 bios
