I really don't see any problems with that large of a swap file. I have 224 mb of RAM and I let windows manage my swap file size, and it uses about 330 mb of Hdd space. I don't think I have ever run enough programs at one time to even come close to needing that much.
I guess the only downfall to a 1gb swap file is that that 1gb of space is going to become very fragmented. If you can partition your hdd to have that igb by itself, and then use it as the swap file, then you could defrag it every couple of days and keep it very clean and efficient. If you do not make it its own partition, you have to defrag the whole hdd to clean up that space.

Why a 1GB swap file? How much RAM does this machine have? I'm not sure
what the downside would be other than the size.
