While I certainly do not consider myself an expert on this, it is just possible
that you may need a driver for this "mass storage device". Older tech though
it may be, when installing NT 4.0 server you must press F6 at a certain point
in the initial setup stages in order to load such a driver for, say, a RAID array,
a SCSI hard disk, etc. My Abit motherboard included a RAID driver disk
(I'm not currently using this feature, so I did not install with it) that would have
had to have been used in this way during an installation of XP. Your situation
with Serial ATA may be similar. Setting up XP, like NT, does include a step
where you press F6 to load additional "mass storage device" drivers. If
your original purchase did not include such a disk (my board included a floppy
with the necessary drivers--not big at all), I suspect Dell would be the place
to check for one. It may even be available for download based on your model
and configuration.
