Hi David et cie

I don't know if this will solve your particular problem, but I had the
same problem with a required password on my simple home network. The
main PC runs Windows 2000 (SP3), while the other machine has Windows 98
SE. From the 2000 machine I could "see" the other machine, as well as
all the shares on it. From the 98 machine I could only "see" the 2000
PC, but no shares were visible. I also have the printer connected to
the main (2000) machine and this printer is shared between the two
PC's. (Incidentally, the printer setup was done on the 98 PC when both
PC's had 98 SE on them. Since then I have upgraded the main PC to
2000.) I tried to add a new user on the machine, but was unable to do
so.

I have looked at the setup on the 2000 machine, and noticed that the
Guest account was not enabled on the PC. I enabled the account
(rightclick on the account, choose properties and uncheck the "Account
is disabled". make sure that the "User must change password..." is
unchecked, Click on apply and the on OK). I then restarted the other
machine and viola! I could see all the shares on the 2000 PC, and NO
MORE PASSWORD!! I was able to print from that machine as well.

I then added a new user, using the same username as that used for
signing in on the 98 PC, giving the user administrator rights on the
2000 PC, disabled the Guest account on the 2000 PC, and restarted the 98
PC. Again I had success, jumping for joy to the extent that the dogs
came to see what's going on!

Hope that wil help you as well.
