Hi Monica,

Since this is the hardware side of PC lists, I think your question is very appropo.

The best response to your question is another question. What will you use the laptop for?

The use of the laptop will dictate the speed, memory needs, size of screen which also dictates the weight of laptop and software ie office suites.

This list has archives and therein you will find lots of information on just about any make and model of laptop on the market. If you have the answers to the above questions, it will make it alot easier to make a decision.

Or you can go to each OEM of the popular laptop models and make comparisons.

I know that this might sound complicated but choosing a laptop is a very personal, expensive endeavor. You want to be happy with your laptop.

After you have an idea of what you want, go to a store and actually look at the laptop. Most stores have working models on display.

Finally each of us has our favorites. For the posters on this list Dell seems to be the majority of choice. I personally have owned a Compaq, an Apple Powerbook 3400, an HP, a Sony Vaio and Dell Inspiron and my new laptop is the Dell Studio 17. By far, I recommend Dell computers. As one poster said, check Consumer reports as a final research tool.

As to price, the price you stated is on the low side so research will really be the key for getting more bang for your buck. Most OEM's have a "refurbished" section with FULL warranty. This may save you some money. Also, if you or someone you know, has "employee" buyer programs you can find some great deals.

Buying a laptop from one of the auction sites has it's own set of problems.

You might can contact a well respected computer Sales company in your area wherein they might have a used/refurbished model WITH warranty at a reasonable price.

Good luck.
