Have you tried sys c:? If you can boot from a floppy, and see the hard
drive, there's a good chance the boot files are simply missing. Assuming
this is a Win 9x machine, boot from the floppy and navigate to the
c:\<windir>\command directory and copy sys.com to the floppy. Change back to
the floppy drive and type this command:

sys c:

Try again to boot from the hard drive, may just work.
