Pick a drive maker -- almost any drive maker. If you ask around,
you'll find people with horror stories about their drives and (if the
maker is still in business...) people who swear they're the best.

I know of ONE exception: I have never heard of anyone with a
horror story about an IBM hard drive. [I have not, of course,
surveyed every user of IBM drives, but this isn't the only online
forum I try to find time for....]
In our own case, we opted for a high-end Fujitsu for single-drive
servers (and found they ran uncomfortably hot) and a mid range drive
from IBM for RAID arrays. When we moved some servers to DEC Alphas,
they got DEC RAID arrays too, so the IBMs became our pool of on-hand
replacement drives.
We discovered that not only did the IBMs run much cooler than the
Fujitsus, but that for half the price they are giving us TWICE the
performance.

WD - some like them, some don't, I have one and it works okay.
Fujitsu - I've used them and still do, but don't recommend them any
more. IBM - fast solid drives, I recommend them these days.
