It sounds as if he bumped or some how damaged his keyboard connector
on the motherboard.  I am sure you have already thought about this...

Check the CMOS settings to be sure he has not disable the keyboard,
but, some how I do not think this would create this error.   (Some motherboards
have this setting to run a computer as a server without a keyboard attached).
